Trail Terms

Brood – A young animal (often heard when talking about baby birds).

Cache – A place to hide food or other supplies out in the wilderness.

Cairn - An obviously manmade pile of stacked rocks built as a trail marker. Cairns should be close enough to see the next one in heavy fog, and high enough to see above fallen snow.

Geocaching - A high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment. There are 762,581 active geocaches around the world. (Check out Weber Pathways Geocaching Outings on the Events Calendar…and come along!)

GORP – A delicious snack that is common to eat when out in the wilderness (camping, hiking, etc.) It is usually made with raisins, peanuts, and M&M's – try making some yourself!

Headlamp – A light attached to a strap worn around your head. Good for nighttime hikes!

Pulaski – A multi purpose trail building and maintaining tool that is one half axe, and one half adze.

Switchback- A method of building a trail that forms a zig-zag of trails up a mountain. The strategy is to prevent erosion and to make the climb easier. Switchbacks are not made to be short cutted although some people do, which damages trail. Switchbacks are often appreciated by hikers.

Yurt - A round structure that is kind of like a tent. It's good for keeping warm and dry in the winter. You can hike to the one near Snow Basin!
